TOTAL METAL artwork by Erik Danielsson |
The exhibition, similarly to the aforementioned book, explores and traces back the origins and the history of the fierce Swedish metal music, which is very rich specifically in extreme metal, as anyone reading this website surely knows very well.
Through several memorabilia, posters, demo tapes, fanzines, t-shirts, stage props (including of course some from WATAIN's stage) and more, the exhibition appears to be an excellent way to immerse in the decades which shaped Swedish extreme metal, with its powerful and legendary bands which continue to inspire and fuel the fire of musicians and listeners nowadays.
There is also an authentic rehearsal room recreated on site!
"Like all underground culture, extreme metal was created by young people in opposition – a rebellion against a gray and forbidding society, the mundane and, in some cases, religion. It is an exploration of the darker side of humanity", explains the introduction on the exhibition's page. " It is meant to shake you to the core, to challenge you and give you strength. This exploration would take on even more violent forms with the rise of the black metal scene. In the exhibition Total Metal, you’ll experience the power that has shaped Swedish metal and given it a special place on the world stage."
The visit is introduced with a five-minute film by director Jonas Åkerlund, summarizing the history of Swedish heavy metal.
TOTAL METAL will run until September 21st, 2025 and more information can be found on Kulturhuset Stadsteatern's website (Swedish - English).
